Hike the Lostland Trail in Potomac State Forest
This 3.5 mile trail follows the Lostland Run showing us beautiful waterfalls along the way finishing at the headwaters of the Potomac River. This trail affords the hiker with rewards of beautiful spring flowers such as Jack-in-the-Pulpit, Trilliums, and Jewelweed. Later a fragrant scent from the mountain laurel fill the air. Later in summer cool off with a dip in the Potomac River pools with spectacular boulders. Truly a great hike!
Fly Fish in the Youghiogheny River
With Garrett County beautiful streams and rivers, opportunities for learning the art of fly fishing abound. The joy of catching and releasing a rare brown trout or a rainbow are just waiting for you. The thrill of a beautiful cast and the peacefulness of the hobby are irresistible. One of my favorite guides and instructor is Harold Harsh at Spring Creek Outfitters.
Golf at Garrett County’s Awesome Courses
One of the secrets of Garrett County is that it has great golf courses. First and foremost is the Lodestone Course at Wisp Resort designed by Hale Irwin. With the finest quality fairways, tees and greens, it offers spectacular scenery and magnificent views. Every hole is unique and presents some challenges for your golfing abilities. Next the Oakland Golf Course offers an outstanding golf experience with some history to boot. The Western Maryland Amateur Championship has been held here for over 50 years. Don’t miss this course in the fall with beautiful fall foliage. Last but not least is the well designed Thousand Acres golf course. Only 9 holes but an outstanding golf venue that will be well worth the visit.
Whitewater Raft at the Adventure Sports Center International
This man-made whitewater course was built for championship events but operates during the summer season for a whitewater guided raft trip fun for all. This is a great introduction to whitewater rafting and is fun to do with families and friends. The trips are a little less than two hours and a great workout.
Cross County Ski on our State Park trails
If downhill skiing does not appeal to you, you might want to try cross country skiing. Herrington Manor and New Germany State Parks offer great trails for cross country skiing. There is a peacefulness to skiing through the beautiful woods. Be prepared to see wildlife such as deer, turkeys and the occasional fox crossing the trails.
Spend a day cruising the Lake
Rent a pontoon boat for a day, pack a lunch and explore Deep Creek Lake with all its coves. With children aboard make sure you also include some tubes for pulling the kids around for some extra fun. Consider bringing your fishing pole. One day on the lake will never be enough. Seeing the beautiful homes from the lake will certainly make you want to have one of your own.
Sunset Cocktails on the Water at Deep Creek Lake
Sitting on a dock with a glass of wine watching the sun set is the perfect ending to a beautiful day in Garrett County. Another favorite spot to watch the sun set is Deep Creek’s Mountain State Brewing Company on Sang Run Road in McHenry.
